The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona was first introduced in 1963. What followed is hard to believe about the first model of what was probably the most sought-after watch on the luxury watch market. At the time, the Daytona was practically ignored by customers. In the mid-1970s, it even got to the point where a specialist dealer in Chicago officially announced that this watch was not a real Rolex and that he was offering a 40 percent discount on the model. At that time, this was an absolute extreme case in the luxury watch market. Neither the design nor the hand-wound movement seemed to appeal to customers. In 1988, the first Cosmograph Daytona ref was revised and presented in Basel with a new automatic movement, albeit with only a slightly modified design. The steel version in particular exceeded all expectations and resulted in extremely long waiting lists, which still exist today for the current model. In 2001, the Daytona was first introduced with a movement specially developed by Rolex and became the star of the world's largest watch fair in Basel. Even today, the new model of the watch bears strong resemblance to its original model. The case measures 40 mm in diameter and has a 20 mm lug width.
