The Rolex Milgauss was originally developed for scientists who come into contact with magnetic fields. Mechanical watches are susceptible to magnetic fields with a strength of approximately 50 gauss and above, depending on the shielding of the case and the magnetic properties of individual parts of the movement. Gauss is the official unit of measurement for the strength of magnetic fields. If individual parts of a movement become magnetically charged, the accuracy of the movement can be significantly impaired. In such cases, demagnetization by a watchmaker is usually helpful. In the case of regular contact or in the presence of very strong magnetic fields, the movement can be permanently damaged. For this reason, Rolex has developed a watch whose mechanical movement can withstand a considerable strength of up to 1,000 gauss without being affected. According to Rolex, the Milgauss model is the first watch that can be used in a field of up to 1,000 gauss. The movement is shielded by a special ferromagnetic alloy. This special feature qualifies the watch for use by scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research at CERN in Switzerland, for example.
Another unique feature of the Rolex Milgauss is the green sapphire crystal combined with a blue dial. This allows the watch to be paired with both leather straps in shades of green and blue. Our Sommar-Blue suede strap, for example, perfectly complements the Milgauss's Z-blue dial. The Aventy-Green suede watch strap, in turn, highlights the green tone of the sapphire crystal. Those who prefer a more understated style are well advised to choose a black or gray watch strap, such as the Mountain-Grey leather strap with its elegant matte finish on the Italian calfskin.
