According to Breitling, the SuperOcean was developed in 1957 for divers and military use. Thanks to the attractive design and functionality of this mechanical wristwatch from Breitling, it quickly achieved great popularity among watch enthusiasts and recreational divers. The SuperOcean was initially water-resistant to just 200 meters, which was a high standard in the 1950s and 60s. Later, Breitling further developed its diving watch and launched a version with a water resistance of 1,500 meters via a helium valve, the Colt SuperOcean, in the 1990s. The helium valve is used to equalize pressure when ascending from extreme depths. In extremely high overpressure conditions, the light gas helium penetrates the watch case underwater and can create excess pressure within the watch during a subsequent ascent, which is then safely released via the valve. The original design of the Breitling SuperOcean from the 1950s was revived for this diver's watch's anniversary and introduced as the SuperOcean Heritage with 200 meters of water resistance. A simple unidirectional rotating bezel and the vintage Milanese bracelet with a stainless steel mesh look are distinguishing features of the old Breitling SuperOcean.
