The GMT Master was the first Rolex Oyster Perpetual to display two time zones simultaneously and was first delivered in 1954. The development of the first watch was based on a request from the management of Pan American Airlines in 1953. The airline was originally looking for a watch for its pilots that would display both the local time at the arrival point and the time at the departure point simultaneously. Based on the basic ideas of Hans Wilsdorf, the first watch was developed a year later and its design is almost identical to this day. The second time zone is displayed via an additional hour hand. This, in conjunction with the bezel, allowed the time zone to be set. The first models of the watch were delivered with a plastic bezel to avoid reflections in the cockpit. However, the material could not withstand the high stresses in the cockpit and was quickly replaced with a steel bezel. Today, the first and particularly rare models are highly sought after by collectors. At that time, Pan American Airlines chose the GMT Master as its official watch, equipping ground crew with the white dial version and flight crew with black dial watches. With today's GMT Master II, the second time zone can also be read via the additional hour hand, which can now be separately adjusted via the crown. The case diameter is 40 mm with a lug width of 20 mm. You can find more information about the new Steel version of the GMT Master II.
The legendary Pepsi design of the steel GMT Master II case goes perfectly with a blue or reddish brown leather bracelet, like the Vild-Brown Nato Strap The black dial also goes perfectly with the Fin-Black watch strap in black, which gives the almost unchanged design from 1954 an elegant vintage style.
