The Speedmaster Chronograph was first launched by Omega in 1957. Even then, the mechanical wristwatch featured a black dial, a tachymeter scale on the case, luminous hands, a screw-down case back, and a domed Plexiglas crystal. The Speedmaster was marketed as a watch designed for science, industry, and sports. With its tachymeter for measuring speed, it quickly became popular in motorsports. A few years after its introduction, this Omega Speedmaster ref was tested by NASA, along with other watches, in search of a suitable timepiece for the 1962 moon mission. Thanks to its shatterproof Plexiglas crystal, robust durability, and manual winding, it won the tests and became legendary as the first watch on the moon. This is why it is also known today as the Moonwatch. With its timeless design, the Speedmaster remains one of the most popular watches. It now has a diameter of 42 mm and a lug width of 20 mm.

In 2022, Omega, in cooperation with Swatch, garnered much attention with the launch of the so-called MoonSwatch, an interpretation of the famous Moonwatch.
