In 1957, the Speedmaster Chronograph was first launched by the Omega brand. Characteristics of the mechanical wristwatch back then were the black dial, the tachymeter scale on the case, the luminous hands, a screwed back and cambered plexiglass. The Speedmaster was marketed as a watch designed for science, industry, and sports. With the tachymeter for speed measurement, it quickly became popular in racing. A few years after its launch, this Omega Speedmaster ref was tested with other watches by NASA in search of a suitable watch for the moon mission in 1962. Thanks to shatterproof plexiglass, strong durability and manual winding, it won the tests and became the first watch on the moon to a legend. Therefore it is also called Moonwatch today. With its timeless design, the Speedmaster is still one of the most popular watches. It now has a diameter of 42 mm and a lug width for bracelets with a width of 20 mm.

In 2022, Omega, in cooperation with Swatch, attracted a lot of attention with the launch of the so-called MoonSwatch, an interpretation of the famous Moonwatch.
