The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona was introduced for the first time in 1963. What followed is hard to believe about the first model of what is probably the most sought-after timepiece in the luxury watch market overall. At that time, the Daytona was almost spurned by customers. In the mid-1970s, it even got to the point where a specialist dealer in Chicago officially announced that this watch was not a real Rolex and that he was offering a 40 percent discount on the model. At that time, this was an absolute extreme case in the luxury watch market. Neither the design nor the hand-wound movement seemed to appeal to customers. In 1988, the first Cosmograph Daytona ref was revised and presented in Basel with a new automatic movement, but only with a slightly different design. The steel variant in particular exceeded all expectations and resulted in long waiting lists, which still exist today for the current model. In 2001, the Daytona was presented for the first time with a movement developed by Rolex and became the star of the world's largest watch fair in Basel. Even today, the new model of the watch is very reminiscent of its original model. The case measures 40mm in diameter and has a lug width of 20mm.
